Lyrics, No Music Yet, Nostalgia

All These Waves Are Mine

All these waves are mine
They’re finer than 1972 White Wine
All these waves are mine
While this ain’t the Oahu Pipeline
They’re not too choppy
They’re curling just right
There’s not a single surf punk in sight
This morning’s turned out so divine
‘Cause all these waves are mine

I moved to Santa Cruz
when I was nineteen years old
I had my crazy friends
We’d surf, it was rad
We’d smoke cloves and go nuts
and we’d puke out our guts
from eating all that pizza
but it wasn’t all that bad

Now all these waves are mine
They’re tastier than barley wine
All these waves are mine
While this ain’t the Oahu Pipeline
They’re not too choppy
They’re curling just right
There’s not a single grommet in sight
This morning turned out so divine
‘Cause all these waves are mine

Those days I wouldn’t trade
They were not great but just right
I don’t remember many moments
when I was confused and sad
Those guys were there for me
unlike my toxic family
They took me under their wings
when cancer took my Dad

Now some have moved away
They decided not to stay
But I don’t blame them
They had their lives to live
Here I am facing the beach
Feeling so alive and free
It’s deep like meditation
Those mem’ries of us are a gift

All these waves are mine
They’re finer than 1972 white wine
All these waves are mine
This ain’t the Banzai Pipeline
Steamer Lane’s one of a kind
It’s a great place to unwind
Especially without Valleys or Wannabes
What a salty and soothin’ breeze
I’m never gonna leave
‘Cause all these waves are mine

All these waves are mine.

Lyric Notes: I’m not a surfer, but I’ve been around them enough to empathize with them and their feelings about being in the ocean and thinking like a fisherman, you know… All these fish are mine…. but I changed it to waves, and it just made sense. Kind of a fun exercise, I love moving through these ideas and just sharing them to the world, not knowing what will stick and what won’t. It was inspired by Kesha’s “Back to Wonderland.” This one is for all those surfers in Santa Cruz, CA. Hope you are enjoying those great waves in Steamer Lane and also up the coast at Mavericks.  All the best from this Non-Resident Local.
