Life’s Better Now

They say after you turn eighteen
Your best years are far behind you
Your drive to make things happen goes away
like the dreams that won’t come true

Well, I look around this place
and see for us how it all turned out
If I could talk to myself at a younger age
I know what I’d want to cheer him up about

If I got to go back in time
to talk to the teen version of me
I’d tell him all the good news
That he’d have a nice home and family
I’d say true love is what he got
and yeah, he’s still writing songs a lot
I’d tell him he can already take his bow
That it may be overwhelming in 1987
but I’ll be damned, life’s better now

I’d say don’t worry ’bout college
You learned what you learned
And don’t worry ’bout them dead-end jobs
You earned what you earned

Don’t worry ’bout the times you screwed up
Everybody does, there’s no stoppin’ that
When you find the woman you’ll marry
you will know right off the bat

I’d say the time they say he wasted
at home workin’ and havin’ fun
Was time well spent, and
I’m so glad he stuck to his guns

If I got to go back in time
to talk to the teen version of me
I’d tell him all the good news
That he’d have a nice home and family
I’d say true love is what he got
and yeah, he’s still writing songs a lot
I’d tell him he can already take his bow
That it may be overwhelming in 1987
but I’ll be damned, life’s better now.

I’ll be damned, life is better now.

Lyric Notes: I’ve been wanting to write my own version of “Letter to Me,” by Brad Paisley. I think with this one, I’ve done it. My own personal stamp on a theme he wrote about. 🙂 I am happy with it and I hope you are too.
