Blue Blazes

She walks into our favorite bar
And I break into a cold sweat
Her light blue eyes see me
And it’s just like when we met

It was at a Golf Course cafe’
She was waiting there for me
Even though it was February
We had to cool off by the sea

Cause she’s hot
Whoa she’s hot
As Blue Blazes
Blue Blazes

Now she’s holding my hand
And I order her favorite drink
She takes off her winter coat
It was her mother’s faux mink

And she gives me that wink
The one I know so very well
Everyone around us there
Are caught up in her spell

Cause she’s hot
Whoa she’s hot
As Blue Blazes
Blue Blazes

She’s sweeter than candied apples
Her steamy kisses fog up my bifocals
She doesn’t get why she’s admired
By Out of Towners and The Locals
She’s nothing like the rest of them
All the women in this crowded place
She thinks she’s just about average
But she has a timeless sexy face

I’m not sure what she sees in me
Yeah I’m just a regular blue collar joe
I’m the luckiest man because of her
How much I love her, she’ll never know

How I’m so surprised
Out of all the guys
She could have ended up with
She chooses me every night and day
She doesn’t care about my lack of raises
Or my multiple random weird phases
She just thinks I’m hot as blue blazes
And makes me feel like a wealthy king
She’s hot as blue blazes
She’s hot as blue blazes
With her by my side I can do anything

With her by my side I can do anything

Sneaky Cheaters

She started noticing he’d stay up late at night
Textin’ someone, but didn’t say who it was
He’d always go to the bars on the weekends
Then end up at a buddy’s house because

He was too drunk to drive, but that wasn’t right
Her friend saw his buddy and he was a she
They were out in public at local places in town
So that’s why his wife came to see me

I specialize in catchin’ sneaky cheaters
I know their tricks, all their lies they tell
They’re as predictable as winter weather
It’s a product great salesmen cannot sell
They are the leeches & bottom feeders
Who cannot experience love so they leave
They are the desperate sneaky cheaters
abandoning their sad spouses who grieve

She paid me good money to catch them
But also wanted to come along to see
Them holding hands & kissing downtown
Then confront them both & set him free

We did exactly what she wanted to do
After that night I never saw them again
But there are plenty of dishonest lovers
And not all of them are powerful men

I specialize in catchin’ sneaky cheaters
I know their tricks, all their lies they tell
They’re as predictable like winter weather
It’s a haunted mansion Agents cannot sell
They are the leeches & bottom feeders
Who cannot experience love so they leave
They are the desperate sneaky cheaters
abandoning their sad spouses who grieve

If you’re looking for truth about your lover
If you need to know the answers right quick
I’ll be discreet and stay ruthless undercover
It’s what I do, I’m a thorough Private Dick

I specialize in catchin’ sneaky cheaters
I know their tricks, all their lies they tell
They’re as predictable like winter weather
It’s a product great salesmen cannot sell
They are the leeches & bottom feeders
Who cannot experience love so they leave
They are the desperate sneaky cheaters
abandoning their sad spouses who grieve

Abandoning their sad spouses who grieve
Abandoning their sad spouses who grieve

Beloved, Be Happy and Leave

You’ve packed up some of your things
and you’re no longer happy with me
Can’t say that I blame you,
I won’t ever disrespect you,
But beloved, be happy & leave

When we got hitched way back when
I thought you & I would forever be
supportive, loving & kind
But I’ve now lost my mind
So beloved, be happy & leave

Go do whatcha gotta do for your future
Go do whatcha gotta do, I’ll let you go
I only wish for you heavenly happiness
You deserve what you need, this I know

It was paradise, all those nights
But we’ve lost our spark and can’t see
us together anymore because
Our love ain’t what it once was
Dear beloved, be happy & leave

Go do whatcha gotta do for your future
Go do whatcha gotta do, I’ll let you go
I only wish for you heavenly happiness
You deserve what you need, this I know

Oh, was paradise, all those nights
But we’ve lost our spark and can’t see
us together anymore because
Our love ain’t what it once was
My beloved, be happy & leave

Oh, I can’t stand us fightin’ anymore
Please get goin’ out that screen door
I gotta rush to the bathroom & heave
Please, beloved, be happy & leave

Please, beloved, be happy & leave

What’ll Happen When They Love Him?

He’s writin’ a lot, givin’ it all he’s got
He gets up at the crack of dawn
to go work on song after song
and I worry ’bout him while he’s gone

He’s playin’ everywhere, like County Fairs
and honky-tonks who love his stuff
I know I’m probably wrong
but I think I’m now his willing pawn

Chorus:
I wonder what’ll happen when they love him
When I have to share him with all of his fans
What’ll happen when he’s tempted to stray
and meet all of his band’s groupies’ demands?
Will he be true to the commitment we made?
Will he still love me like he does right now?
Oh Lord, what’ll happen when they love him?
Wish I could see into the future somehow

When we met he was livin’ in a small town
and I lived in this big ol’ city all alone
We’d sit at our PC’s and chat via AOL
and he’d tell me his dreams on the phone

But somethin’ happened when we got married
It’s like he cares more about his music than me
Yet still here I am holdin’ all of this inside
Prayin’ he’s never prayin’ to be single and free

Chorus 2:
I wonder what’ll happen when they love him
Will he toss me aside like all of the rest?
What will he sacrifice to go for that brass ring
To be one of Country Music USA’s best?
Will they take him away on a neverending tour
and I’ll find out he’s been cheatin’ on TV?
Oh Lord, what will happen when they love him?
Will he be that man I hope he will be?

Oh Lord, will he be the man I hope he will be?

(From the Trunk)

I had sent this to a high-level Music Executive earlier this year. It is definitely a “scene” in progress. I could see it as part of a Musical. I think he replied with advice so it was lost in my emails.

Until now.

To the Lake and Back

I had a few dollars in my wallet
And I asked her for a walk into town
She went upstairs to get her sweater
And said to me she’d be right down

Then she walked down the staircase
She was showin’ those pearly whites
She winked at me & said she was happy
I could tell it was one of those nights

I told her I loved her to the lake and back
I’d say she was the one I wanted forever
I’d paint her dreams with my sincere words
Each day with her got better & better
I felt so fine with her hand in mine
As I told her my truth line after line
When we got to the sign by the track
She said she loved me to the lake and back

We dated all through my Senior Year
Even though we went to different schools
Our parents thought it was just puppy love
Acting like a couple of lovesick fools

On Graduation Day, she sat with Momma
They didn’t know each other very well
But from what I saw, they got along
A good sign for us as far as I could tell

She said she loved me to the lake and back
She said I was the one she wanted forever
Momma knew those were heartfelt words
She said “You’re good for him, you better”
It felt so good to me that they got along
I knew everything would be just fine
I felt like I was a big winner of blackjack
Man, I loved her to the lake and back

We married in a chapel out in the country
And we promised “Til death do us part”
Every early evening we would take a walk
To this day she still has my devoted heart

But now my love has gone away to Heaven
And I’m raising our daughter best I can
I pray to God she will one day fall in love
With someone who’s honest & has a plan

He’ll say he loves her to the lake and back
Tell her she’s the one he wants forever
Paint her dreams with his sincere words
And each day will get better & better
He’ll feel so fine with her hand in his
As I he tells his truth line after line
And when they get to the sign by the track
She’ll say she loves him to the lake and back

She’ll say she loves him to the lake and back

The Better Thing To Do

Before you took a walk outside
And I never saw your smile again
We talked for quite a while
And fondly remembered when

The rooster crowed that morning
The grass outside was damp from rain
We talked about the pleasure we felt
We tried not to speak of the pain

When you and I both realized
We weren’t meant to be
When you couldn’t keep the promises
That you whispered softly to me
When we knew it wasn’t gonna work
No matter how we wanted it to
When we had to move on to square one
‘Cause it was the better thing to do

I remember holding your fingers
And you’d release them suddenly
The moment I tasted your lying lips
And stopped believing the mystery

I was in denial of what was happening
I couldn’t end it that August night
Now I know I should have been honest
Like I used to be when we’d fight

Like that night
When you and I had realized
We weren’t meant to be
When you couldn’t keep the promises
That you whispered softly to me
When we knew it wasn’t gonna work
No matter how we wanted it to
When we had to move on to square one
‘Cause it was the better thing to do

I sit here on our front room couch
And the kids are at their Mom’s place
Just woke up & realized I’ve been dreamin’
Cause I get to see your joyful face
I look into your sienna eyes
And those lips I love to softly kiss
You’re the one I can’t live without
The one I’d go crazy about and miss

If we realized that cold August night
We weren’t meant to be
If you couldn’t keep the promises
That you whispered softly to me
If we knew it wasn’t gonna work
No matter how we wanted it to
If we moved on quickly to square one
‘Cause it was the better thing to do

I’m so relieved we didn’t conclude
Saying fare-thee-well would be
The better thing to do

Babe,

I’m so relieved we didn’t conclude
Saying fare-thee-well would be
The better thing to do…

Sweet Oahu

V1:

Way back in August of 2002
We went on our honeymoon
To an island far from LA
It was the perfect getaway

We met Don Ho and his family
We walked a lot by the sea
Took a cruise out on the ocean
Covered each other with lotion

Chorus:

Sweet Oahu
We so enjoyed it there
It’s where we didn’t have a care
Where we relaxed and took in some rays
Where we’d wear our Hawaiian flower leis
Where we’d kiss & watch the sunsets
Where life is as good as it ever gets
Where we had no major plans or stress
Where it was ok to not have anything to do
Sweet Oahu, we loved you
We loved you, We loved you.

V2:

We’ve haven’t been back for years
But we still have our souvenirs
And remember everything we did
We also had a couple of kids

Got through love’s rougher waves
Like we promised on our wedding day
Now we’re ready to take another vacay
To take our girls to Honolulu Bay

Chorus:

Sweet Oahu
We so enjoyed it there
Where we didn’t have a care
Where we relaxed & took in some rays
Where we’d wear our Hawaiian flower leis
Where we’d kiss & watch the sunsets
Where life is as good as it ever gets
Where we had no major plans or stress
Where it was ok to not have anything to do
Sweet Oahu, we loved you

Bridge:

I can’t wait to see their laughing faces
when we show them all our favorite places
Where they’ll play in the Hawaiian Village pool
Where they’ll forget ’bout going back to school….

Chorus:

Sweet Oahu
We so enjoyed it there
Where we didn’t have a care
Where we relaxed & took in some rays
Where we’d wear our Hawaiian flower leis
Where we’d kiss & watch the sunsets
Where life is as good as it ever gets
Where we had no major plans or stress
Where it was ok to not have anything to do
Sweet Oahu, we love you
We love you, We love you

Sweet Oahu

One Who Totally Got Me

For my life-giving wife, Melanie Ann Gray

Back in those days I had major issues
When I found a message in my inbox
You grew up in a small town like I did
I was living at home but on the rocks
I was chasing women & drinkin’ heavy
‘Cause each girl wasn’t right for me
As soon as I saw your email I was taken
By your sweetness & refreshing honesty

You saw me through all my trials
You listened to me when I had enough
And told me everything would be ok
You still know exactly what I need to do
The one who totally got me was you

You and I started talking a lot via texting
Not on smartphones, they weren’t out yet
It was via chatting on Yahoo messenger
You said you once danced & played clarinet
You told me you had two older brothers
That intrigued me my dear, ’cause so did I
You didn’t get all the way through college
And recently had broken up with a guy

You saw me through all my trials
You listened to me when I had enough
And told me everything would be ok
You knew exactly what I needed to do
The one who totally got me was you

So I paid attention like a good man should
And we met a year later in a golfing town
I know I should have never kept you waiting
But when I walked in I didn’t see a frown
And we spent all day talking like schoolkids
We ended that night closer than before
We kept dating and eventually got married
We were banking on what was in store

We’ve had sadness but more smiles
You’ve become who I knew you were
I hope you’re happy with what we have
I’ve done what I’ve thought I should do
And I’ll love you beyond this life
My sweet dearest darling wife
The one who totally got me was you

The one who’ll forever get me is you.

Brand New Ball Game

Now that we’ve said our vows
Now that we are married
Now that we’ve committed
To one love until we’re buried

It’s a brand new ball game
Things are different than before
It’s a brand new ballgame
Without innings or keeping score
Without bases, without pitches
With dreams of going
from rags to riches
No, things will never be the same
Cause it’s a brand new ball game
Yeah, it’s a brand new ball game

We’re safe to have disagreements
without the fear of being ejected
There’s a relief I’m feeling now
One I never would have expected

I would have never thought I’d have
the kind of endless joy I used to see
In those couples who chose love
instead of staying single and free

It’s a brand new ball game
Things are different than before
It’s a brand new ball game
Without home runs or keeping score
Without foul balls or bad calls
I still might say,
“You’re killing me, Smalls.”
The Bangles called it an eternal flame
and if we fail, then we’re to blame
In this brand new ball game
This brand new ball game
This brand new ball game
