Don’t You Dare Break Her Heart

I’ve known her since we were ten years old
and I’ll say she’s always been smart
But she’s always had bad luck with men
so don’t you dare break her heart

Don’t you dare break her heart
Don’t you dare break it in two
Don’t even think about hurting her
Or I might just have to hurt you

She has a pattern of attractin’ the bad boys
with only one thing they want to do
And she falls for them hook, line, and sinker
then each one of them runs and they’re through
It turns out each boy’s just not into her
His intention is to make sure they part
So all I ask of you tonight at this bar
is don’t you dare break her heart

It’s not that I think you would do it
It’s not that I think you don’t care
Just be careful with her, she’s been through Hell
If you aren’t sincere, please go elsewhere

She’s coming back and I’ll end it with this
Think of her as a cute lil’ shopping cart
Fill her up with experiences & your love
but don’t you dare break her heart
Don’t you dare break her heart, my friend
If you are planning to do that, then go
I’ll think up an excuse after you leave
I cross my soul she won’t ever know

Lyric Notes: Last night, I was on my way back to BloNo from Champaign-Urbana, IL and was listening to a Grand Ole Opry Willie Nelson CD I bought from the U of I Campus Bookstore. I thought about old Western tunes like his that also have been inspiring me to write and this is my stab at a good ol’ fashioned Western song lyric. Hope you enjoy it.

Come Write a Love Story With Me

We could camp out up at Rabbit Creek
Where we used to play hide and seek
Let’s stay up there for about a week
I promise you it won’t be bleak

Come write a love story with me
Where we’ll hold hands and be carefree
We can go dip in the freezing cold water
Our steamy kisses will make it hotter
Write a love story with me

Let’s not spend money on anything
You’ll rub my body with sunscreen
Let’s get away from this routine
Come write a love story with me

It seems to be we’re on a separate page
You’re in the spotlight and I’m offstage
This is the life I didn’t hope for or expect
I loved it more back then when we necked

Write a love story with me
Where we’ll hold hands and be carefree
We can go dip into that freezing water
Our steamy kisses will make it hotter
Write a love story with me
Let’s cuddle close below a pine tree
I’m not too into this big city scene
Let’s go be the couple we used to be
Come write a love story with me

It’s what we deeply need
Sweetheart, don’t you see
Let’s go back to being
The couple we used to be

Come write a love story with me.

Takin’ dirt roads to a Gulf Coast beach
Drinkin’ cold ones and not givin’ a damn
Stayin’ up til the crack of dawn
and postin’ it all on Instagram
You’ve got your blue jean baby’s hands
And you’re pullin’ her close to you
You’re both young and you have tans
You dream of moving to Malibu

The girls are Snapchattin’ instead of callin’
The guys are actin’ like young crazy fools
You’ve got the whole world in front of you
And you’re into breakin’ them rules
Who taught you how to live like this?
It’s those songs playin’ on the radio
When you’re all hangin’ out in a cornfield
And you’re just goin’ with the flow

There’s Blake Shelton and Eric Church
Dierks Bentley and Thomas Rhett
Zac Brown Band’s got their ass in the sand
Keith Urban’s working on another song I bet
And it’s about Rivers, Bonfires and Babes
It’s about gunners zoomin’ down that road
Or big truck drivers eatin’ at the Flyin’ J
Before they pick up another load
Brad Paisley wants to get Mud on the Tires
Florida Georgia Line’s praisin’ good ol’ fun
And that’s what life is when you’re all about
Bro-Country 101

Headin’ to NASCAR races with Tim McGraw
Tubin’ on a river with a group you enjoy
You’re obsessing about this girl you like
The girls just want a Small Town Boy
And everybody’s screamin’ “Hell Yeah!”
Someone’s streamin’ songs from Spotify
Preachin’ ignorin’ first world problems
And just watchin’ those clouds roll by

The girls are Snapchattin’ instead of callin’
The guys are actin’ like young crazy fools
You’ve got the whole world in front of you
And you’re into breakin’ them rules
Who taught you how to live like this?

You’re a Match

She’s the girl to write home about
And she knows who you are
You’re shy and you’re intimidated
‘cause everyone’s around her at the bar
And in your dreams you approach her
You’re not scared one bit
You find out she loves baking
And in the evening she likes to knit

Her favorite band is TMBG
Her favorite dessert is Apple Pie
She doesn’t like it when you sit there
And you tell her a straight up lie
She doesn’t want you to solve her problems
She just wants you to be her rock
When she’s feeling down she’ll want you
To take her for a peaceful walk

So take that chance
Make your way
Through that crowd
And it’ll be OK
Just be yourself
You’re her catch
You’ll soon see
You’re a match

You caught her eye when you walked in
She has looked over at you a lot
She’s hoping you have enough courage
To come on over and give it a shot
She’s just as nervous as you are
She’s tired of all those nasty jerks
She longs for something that’s real
Wants to be in a relationship that works

So take that chance
Make your way
Through the crowd
And save the day
She can’t wait
You’re her catch
You’re meant to be
You’re a match

Bridge:

You’ve got this my friend
You’ll see, she really wants you
So do whatever you can
To make it all come true
Just relax and have some fun
You’ll see, it’s meant to be
Last week she wanted to know
If you were single and free

Solo, then back to Second Chorus.

Song Notes:

TMBG: They Might Be Giants. I would say this is my version of "She Loves You."

American Songster

American Songster
Writing songs every day
about hating the Winter
about Flowers in May
American Songster
Writing songs every night
Dreaming up music
To him it feels right

He makes ends meet
by working odd jobs
Sometimes he’s happy
Sometimes he sobs
He enters contests
Wants the grand prize
American Songster
So creative and wise

American Songster
Unknown for now
He’s gonna make it
He doesn’t know how
He doesn’t know when
He writes ’cause it’s fun
He writes for himself
and it’s for everyone

He makes ends meet
by working odd jobs
Sometimes he’s happy
Sometimes he sobs
Notepads are filled up
The talent is there
American Songster
recording in his lair.

Song Notes: This one is inspired by people like Daniel Johnston (before he became well known) and many others, like me who write and write and write and who knows when they’ll make it but they have to keep going no matter what. It’s just in their blood. This is for all my homies who are also American Songsters. Hang in there ladies and gents. We’ll all get there in the end.

Downtown Santa Cruz

There’s a man singing in the alcove
His protest songs are pretty deep
His voice would make a crocodile
Lay right over on his back and weep

There’s a homeless lady in the street
Her bike fell and she barks
And the police car drives up close
Then pulls over and parks

Downtown Santa Cruz
It’s a place I love to be
Downtown Santa Cruz
It means so much to me
Downtown Santa Cruz
So unlike all the rest
Downtown Santa Cruz
Of all downtowns, it’s the best

There’s Bookshop SC where I browse
their magazine racks and shop for books
There’s Camouflage and I’ll go in there
When I want to get some dirty looks

Walnut Avenue is my breakfast spot
Where Cooper House was, is O’Neill’s
and over at the Nickelodeon
is where I feel all my good feels

Downtown Santa Cruz
It’s a place I love to go
Downtown Santa Cruz
It’s awesome, don’t cha know
Downtown Santa Cruz
It's even better than Oahu
If it was ever demolished
I don’t know where I’d go or do

At the Catalyst I’ve seen many shows
Like Evan Dando and Matthew Sweet
Seeing Pearl Jam’s secret show there
Sure was a big ol’ treat

Logos and Streetlight are great places
To buy used vinyl, movies, and cd’s
Pizza My Heart is where I’ll be at Midnight
Eating a slice of pepperoni and cheese

Downtown Santa Cruz
It’s a place I love to be
Downtown Santa Cruz
It means so much to me
Downtown Santa Cruz
So unlike all the rest
Downtown Santa Cruz
Of all downtowns, it’s the best

Downtown Santa Cruz
Of all downtowns, it’s the best.

I worked as a Downtown Hospitality Guide in the 90's and I know it well. Of course I had to write a tribute to my favorite place to go & be. Yay DTSC!

Man, I Feel Like Crap Today

All my clothes are still in the hamper
And I haven’t gotten out of bed
I woke up with an ugly hangover
I don’t remember what we said
And then I looked at my cell phone
Looks like I did a drunk text
After he said he was leaving me
I called him a jerk and said “Next!”

I should be feeling better
I should be happier than I am now
I should be dancing in the backyard
But all I’m thinking is wow
I really messed up
he was all dressed up
From what I can remember I was cray
Man, I feel like crap, today

I turned on the bedroom TV
And I watched the local HOI news
Gretchen and Mark had an exclusive
That shook me and gave me the blues
They said there was a fatal accident
Out on the dirt road by Route 122
It was heartbreaking to find out
I could have been in there with you

I should be feeling better
I should be happier than I am now
I should be dancing in the backyard
But all I’m thinking is wow
I didn’t say goodbye
Now I’m asking why
Man, I feel like crap, today

You were my best friend
And I can’t believe you’re gone
My dear pickup truck
I hope my heart can go on
I don’t know what to say
Except, man, I feel like crap today

Man, I feel like crap today.

Song Notes:

I imagine Alison Krauss really doing this one justice. It’s a joke song, but it would be so great to hear her voice sing it.

Updates to the GMM Website

I have added more info within a new section in this website called “Social & Project Links” to further explain some very essential things about who I’ve worked with and the stories about working with them.  I think it’s a good place to look at the History of my Career and see how much we have worked to get this far.

I hope to add in some various things I’ve been working on here as well.  It’s a very complicated process to get everything squared away, including the links to songs I’ve been working on or what exactly I want to add on this website.

Hope you are enjoying it, thanks for coming along on this journey with me!

Best,

M.K. Gray
